Shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy is a specialized technique within physiotherapy in which patients are exposed to powerful pulse waves. Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical treatment that promotes healing of chronic tendon, muscle, or ligament injuries. Moreover, the treatment is 100% safe and completely painless. An advantage of shockwave therapy is that it has a very short treatment duration per session, while the percentage of therapy success after few treatments is very high. This makes this technique a very popular and effective therapy for many conditions. Just a small intervention with shockwave can lead to excellent results!

How does it work?

With a machine we exert high pressure pulse waves into an injured structure. This causes a biological reaction of tissue cells. Moreover, shockwave therapy stimulates blood flow to the area, further promoting healing. By promoting a new inflammatory or healing response, tissue repair is then facilitated.

What can be treated with shockwave therapy?

This treatment technique is successfully used for the treatment of muscle-tendon tissue and tendon attachments. Shockwaves accelerate the healing process by activating the self-healing properties of the body. They stimulate metabolism and improve blood circulation. Shockwave therapy is used for the following, most common conditions/injuries:

  • Chronic elbow pain (tennis or golfer’s elbow);
  • Chronic shoulder conditions with calcium deposits;
  • Jumper’s knee;
  • Heel spurs;
  • Pain just below the kneecap;
  • Chronic Achilles tendon pain (achillodynia);
  • Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS);
  • Chronic neck, shoulder or back pain and tension (trigger points);
  • Shin Splints;
  • Other forms of tendonitis or tendinosis.
