Dry Needling

Dry Needling is a common technique within physiotherapy and is often used in our clinics. Dry needling is used to treat tensed muscles, decrease pain, improve mobility and function.  This technique uses fine needles and are inserted into trigger points in muscles. The needles penetrate deep into the knots of muscles, to relieve tension and increase blood flow to the region. Relaxing these trigger points can release long held pain.

A trigger point is a cramped spot in a muscle that often causes radiating pain in addition to local pressure pain. The treatment focuses on turning off the trigger point. Trigger points can manifest themselves in:

  • Pain and stiffness locally in the muscle and/or radiating;
  • Movement limitations in associated joints;
  • Decreased strength in the involved muscles;
  • Pain-avoiding behavior;
  • Dry needling treatment.

When is Dry needling used?

Dry Needling is an effective treatment and is suitable for the following conditions:

  • Acute conditions: wrong movement, an accident or a sports injury;
  • In case of chronic conditions – e.g., due to a long-term incorrect posture and/or RSI/CANS;
  • Weak ligaments in, for example, ankles and/or knees;
  • Long-term overload of, for example, the arm/shoulder when using the computer;
  • Mental factors, such as stress and depression;
  • Tension of muscle tissue in a meniscus injury or a hernia;
  • Foot deformities, instability and/or differences in leg length e.g., after a bone fracture or surgery;
  • Clothing that is too tight or wearing a backpack incorrectly.

Does it hurt?

The insertion of a needle is barely noticeable. During the treatment, the muscles (trigger points) will suddenly tighten. This “cramping” can be a little painful for a brief period of time. Therefore, the effect of dry needling is immediately noticeable.

I suffered from a stiff neck because of working from home at the dinner table. After a few treatments including dry needling from Sander, I was finally able to move my neck again and without any pain!
